Leaning Tower of Pisa: frequently asked questions

Do I need to book the Tower in advance?

It is the best idea. The Tower is visited at a fixed day and time and the places are limited, so the time you want may not be available.

What happens if I am late for my Tower time?

You do not go in and the ticket is not refunded. Be at the entrance 15 minutes before your time.

Can children go up the Tower?

Only if they turn 8 during the year. In 2026 that means children born in 2018 or earlier, with a ticket, a paying adult and a document that shows their age.

Where do I leave my bag?

There is a free cloakroom for everyone who goes up the Tower. Bags and backpacks cannot go up the stairs. In the other monuments the bag can be at most 20 x 30 x 38 centimetres, and large luggage is not allowed.

Is the Cathedral free?

Entry is free, but you need a pass. The pass comes with every ticket. A free pass with a fixed time for the Cathedral alone is given only at the ticket offices in the square, in limited numbers.

How long does the climb take, and how many steps are there?

The visit takes about 30 minutes. The climb has around 250 steps, on foot, with an uneven floor.
